Week 9

Our kindergarten and first grade classes are learning about symmetry and radial symmetry in visual art. We first practiced symmetry by designing symmetrical butterflies, and then we practiced radial designs using a circular template. This unit’s culminating project is making a radial design, called a mandala, using cardboard and foam shapes. See the process for creating the mandalas below!

The students first plan out their design and glue down shapes.

Next, they use oil pastel to add color to each shape.

Last, they pick one color to paint the background of their mandala.
