2nd & 3rd Grade Updates
What a beautiful start to our brand new year! Its been wonderful to see all the students get into the groove of learning as they returned to school this year. This month we focused on reviewing classroom expectations and routines that will set us up for success!
Math
Our young mathematicians have been revisiting their addition and subtraction skills for numbers up to 50. They practiced figuring out the solutions to addition and subtraction problems using manipulatives such as counting bears and cubes. They revisited topics such as ways to make 10, skip counting and place value. Students are also learning how to view and interpret data with different kinds of graphs, ex:bar graphs, picture graphs.
At Home:
- Students can continue to practice solving addition and subtration problems.
- Have students read and organize different data from things around them.
Core Value Spirit Week
This month, we celebrated Core Value Spirit Week, focusing on our school’s values of Integrity, Curiosity, Resilience, Collaboration, and Joy. Students explored what each value means and how they can demonstrate them every day in and out of the classroom.
Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month
We ended the month by kicking off Hispanic Heritage Month! Our class has been learning all about El Salvador—its culture, geography, and traditions—and comparing it to other countries in Central and South America. The students have enjoyed discovering the similarities and differences between these vibrant cultures. Students have also created their own variations of crafts inspired by the Salvadoran culture.
Writing Workshop
In writing, we continue to focus on Small Moment stories. Students have been crafting creative personal narratives about meaningful experiences in their lives—each story filled with detail and heart!
Reading Focus
During reading, we’ve been reading different kinds of genres and texts that can help learn about how to be a good citizen. We have also been learning about Author’s Purpose, Central Idea and Characters. Students are learning how to think deeply about why authors write and what important messages they want readers to understand. As well as identifying characters in the story and describing their inside and outside traits.
