Music at PS 896
Welcome to music at the School of Creativity and Innovation! I’m Mr. Dupont, and I teach music to every student from 3K through 5th grade.
Our music classes are hands-on. Rooted in the Orff Schulwerk approach, with ideas from Dalcroze, Feierabend, and Kodály, students learn music by singing, moving, playing, and creating before they read it on the page. Younger students explore steady beat, high and low sounds, and movement through songs, games, and stories. As they grow, they play xylophones, metallophones, and drums, learn to read rhythms and melodies, and improvise and compose their own music. Third graders begin ukulele and recorder, and our upper grades study World Music Drumming, playing music from West Africa, Latin America, and the Caribbean.
We sing in many of the languages our students speak at home, including English, Spanish, and Mandarin, and we explore music from cultures around the world. Through Carnegie Hall’s Musical Explorers and Link Up programs, students meet professional musicians and learn music they later perform with them.
Every class performs at our Winter Concert and Lunar New Year show, and our Spring Concert celebrates everything students have learned during the year. Check back each month to see what we’re learning!

¡Bienvenidos a la clase de música de la School of Creativity and Innovation! Soy el maestro Dupont y enseño música a todos los estudiantes, desde 3K hasta 5.º grado.
Nuestras clases de música son prácticas y activas. Basadas en el enfoque Orff Schulwerk, con ideas de Dalcroze, Feierabend y Kodály, invitan a los estudiantes a aprender música cantando, moviéndose, tocando y creando antes de leerla en la partitura. Los más pequeños exploran el pulso constante, los sonidos agudos y graves, y el movimiento a través de canciones, juegos y cuentos. A medida que crecen, tocan xilófonos, metalófonos y tambores, aprenden a leer ritmos y melodías, e improvisan y componen su propia música.
