Welcome to Class 205!
Dear Families,
Welcome to the 2025-2026 school year at P.S. 896! My name is Kim French, and I am very excited to work alongside my co-educators, you, and your scholar this year. This welcome letter is sent with tremendous anticipation for the start of a magnificent school year. Plans are already under way for exciting activities, lessons, projects, and much more. This is an exciting time as children come upon new adventures in learning.
More class policies and details
We hope to make your child’s learning experience a productive and positive one, and we hope to instill a love of learning. So many things will happen in our classroom. In fact, this year will be important transitions. It is tremendously important to keep in mind that we all build small successes. Each child will progress at his/her own rate, acquiring skills as he/she is developmentally ready. Maintaining each child’s self-esteem and building a secure foundation for future growth remain a priority in our classroom. Here are some ways you can help: Celebrate your child’s success, no matter how small it may seem. This will help your child become enthusiastic about learning and proud of their work! Read to and with your child every day, if possible. The more your child is exposed to language, the easier it will be for him/her to incorporate new skills in reading and writing in the classroom.
We will be learning so many new things. In Reading, we will be working on building independent readers, understanding how characters contribute to the sequence of events in story, summarizing parts of a story, and providing evidence for claims about facts in informational books. In Writing, we will draft, plan, and edit personal narratives, opinion pieces, and write researched-based essays. In Math, scholars will add and subtract within 100, measure lengths, compare & order numbers within 1,000, identify odd & even numbers, identify fractions, and distinguish between defining and nondefining attributes of shapes.
Parent/Teacher Communication: We believe that a good parent-teacher relationship is necessary for maximum school success. Throughout the year we will communicate with you through class dojo, google classroom, telephone calls, progress reports, and parent-teacher conferences. I encourage you to contact us if you have any questions or concerns. During the school day call 347-588-1893 or via email @kfrench2@schools.nyc.gov. We will get back to you within 24 hours.
Blue Card & Emergency Contact: Each student should have a completed emergency contact card (blue card) on file. Blue cards are currently completed and housed in our OPEROO APP. If there are any changes to parents’ contact information, please notify us so it can be updated accordingly. Please update all emergency contacts on your child’s blue card in the event that you are unable to pick up your child. If the person picking up your child is not listed on the blue card, we are unable to release your child due to safety protocols. Bring your ID for verification purposes.
Homework: Your child will be using a pocket folder as a home/school folder. This folder will be used to transport homework as well as important letters, and notes for home. It is necessary that this folder be sent back to school each day. If you have any concerns that need my attention in the morning, PLEASE feel free to slip a note into this folder.
Day of Learning:
School Start Time: 8:10 AM
School Dismissal Time: 2:30 PM
There will be so many wonderful and new things your child will learn this year. They will grow as readers, writers, and thinkers. Again, we look forward to teaching your child and working with you to help your child achieve their fullest potential. Let’s enjoy this journey together.
Best Regards,
Ms. French, Ms. Cathy, Mr. Juan, and Mr. Brown
