Class 103 has had a busy and productive start to November! Here’s what students have been learning and experiencing across different subjects:
Math: Class 103 has been working diligently on solving word problems that involve finding missing addends in both addition and subtraction situations. In the upcoming unit, students will build on their understanding of teen numbers by recognizing 10 ones as a new unit called “a ten” and using the structure of 10+n to add and subtract within 20. They will learn to strategically decompose and recompose numbers to make tens—for instance, breaking apart 6 into 1 and 5 when adding 9+6, so they can make a ten (9+1=10) and then easily add the remaining 5 to get 15—while also exploring subtraction strategies and reinforcing the connection between addition and subtraction as inverse operations.
Reading: Students will continue exploring the unit “My Family and My Friends,” where they are developing comprehension skills by identifying settings in stories, expanding their vocabulary through synonyms and antonyms, strengthening their grammar knowledge with nouns and verbs, and learning to navigate text features that help them understand and locate information in their reading materials.
Writing: The class is wrapping up their narrative writing unit and will transition to focusing on “how-to” stories throughout the month of November, where they will learn to write clear, sequential instructions that teach readers how to complete a task or process.
Special Events: The students also had their Halloween parade and they looked awesome!
