Whats happening in 2nd grade?
This month has been full of curiosities and new adventures.
This month students have been busy discovering new ideas in math, reading, writing, and PBL. Students have learned how to identify and interpret data using multiple ways. They have been reading various of different texts including poetry, drama and writing personal narratives.
Math: Addition & Subtraction and Problem Solving within 100
This month, students continued looking at various types of graph and interpreting data. Students have also created their own bar graphs using information given. This month students have also begun learning about different strategies to add and subtract within 100 using place value and the relationship between addition and subtraction. They are using base-ten blocks, composing and decomposing tens, and trying different strategies to make problems easier to solve.
Reading: Exploring Drama and Main Ideas
This month, students focused on the elements of poetry, and drama, including characters, dialogue, and setting. As they read a variety of different texts in a story students identified the connections between texts and visuals. Students also continued learning to identify the main idea and the author’s purpose in texts, thinking about why authors write—to inform, entertain, or persuade.
Writing: Personal Narratives
In the writing workshop, students continued their story as young authors by working on their own personal narratives. Students have continued thinking about different descriptive texts to add to their writing to add detail and express their ideas..
PBL: What’s the Matter
In this unit, students explored different materials and the three states of matter: solids, liquids, and gases. They also learned about how different types of matter can change when being heated, chilled, or agitated. Students also did an experiment and made their own butter to observe the different states of matter change right before their eyes.
Looking Ahead
In November, students will continue to learn and practice different strategies to add and subtract within 100. Students will continue to enhance their writing skills and practice their descriptive language skills. In PBL, students will learned about how our government is organized and the meaning of voting and elections. We are excited to see our second graders continue to explore, create, and grow this month!
