✨ December Learning Highlights ✨
December was a busy and exciting month of learning! Here’s a look at what students have been working on across subjects:
💛 Social-Emotional Learning (SEL)
Students focused on learning how to be good listeners. We practiced important skills such as taking turns when speaking, making eye contact, listening carefully, and using full-body attention. These skills help students build strong relationships and show respect for others.
✍️ Writing
In writing, students worked hard on creating nonfiction chapter books! They learned how authors organize information and added special features to make their books clear and informative. Students included a dedication page, table of contents, and a variety of nonfiction text features such as captions, labels, zoom-in pictures, bold print, and a glossary page. We are so proud of their effort and creativity!
📏 Math
In math, students explored units of measurement, including centimeters, inches, and feet. Through hands-on activities using post-it notes, paper clips, inch tiles, and centimeter cubes, students created their own rulers that measured up to 20. They then compared and contrasted their rulers with classmates to see how they were similar and different. This helped students discover that units matter and can make a big difference when measuring!
🌎 Project Time
During Project Time, students learned about natural disasters and New York’s natural resources, with a special focus on Ridgewood Reservoir. We met with a presenter on Zoom who taught us about the different natural resources found there, as well as the animals and habitats that call it home. Students also learned how environmental protection efforts help preserve these spaces and support New Yorkers. This project helped students understand the importance of caring for our environment and how nature and communities are connected.
❄️ Winter Holiday Celebration ❄️
Our classroom enjoyed a joyful Winter Holiday Celebration filled with fun, creativity, and togetherness! Students participated in festive activities, shared smiles and laughter, and celebrated the season warmly and inclusively. It was a wonderful opportunity for students to build community, practice kindness, and enjoy time with their classmates.
