Catching Up with Visual Arts at PS 896

It’s been a busy year so far! We’ve had a lot of fun creating different projects for Hispanic Heritage Month such as, projects inspired by traditional art objects like Arpilleras, Molas, and Vejigante Masks. Students made Alebrije puppets and symmetry inspired guitars.

In November and December, we moved onto using value in a variety of different ways. Students in the lower building made tints and shades to create amazing day and night paintings. Kids in the upper building made still-lifes from observation using chalk pastels.

The School Decorating Club contributed to painting an amazing mural celebrating the school community. They also contributed to making the banner for the winter concert!

In January and February, we started on learning about the parts of a landscape in the lower building and using one point perspective to create a city street in the upper building.

We also worked on projects for Lunar New Year, like Horse Puppets and Plum Blossoms. In addition during February, students learned about famous Black American artists for Black History Month, like Amy Sherald.

Currently, we are working on Self Portraits in the lower and upper buildings. Kindergarten through 1st grade students in the lower building are using lines and shapes to create their self portraits. 2nd through 3rd grade students in the upper building are using their emotions to make detailed self portraits. While 4th and 5th graders are using proportions, fractions and scale to create more true to life self portraits.

Stay tuned our next unit is going to involve clay sculptures!!
