Exploring and Learning: Second Grade in February
In Ms. Weiwei’s second-grade class, February has been a month full of learning, cultural exploration, and creativity. Students continued developing their skills in math, reading, and writing while also participating in engaging project-based learning (PBL). Through hands-on activities, discussions, and collaborative projects, students strengthened their understanding of academic concepts while exploring new cultures and traditions.
Math: Geometry, Fractions, Time, and Money
This month, students reviewed important math concepts, including 2D and 3D shapes. They practiced identifying and describing geometric figures and explored how these shapes appear in everyday objects. Students also learned about basic fractions such as one-half, one-third, and one-fourth, developing an understanding of how shapes and objects can be divided into equal parts.
In addition, students practiced telling time and recognizing different types of coins. They worked on identifying coins and understanding their values while solving simple real-life money problems. These activities helped students connect math skills to everyday situations.
Reading: Learning from Nonfiction Texts
In reading, students continued exploring nonfiction books and strengthening their ability to gather information from texts. Many of the books we read focused on weather and how it affects our daily lives. Students discussed different types of weather and how they impact our activities, especially after experiencing a snow day this month. Through discussions and shared reading, students practiced identifying key facts and explaining their understanding of informational texts.
Writing: Preparing for Opinion Writing Publication
In the writing workshop, students continued working on their opinion writing pieces. They practiced clearly stating their opinions and supporting their ideas with reasons and examples. During this stage, students focused on revising and improving their writing in preparation for publication. They worked on organizing their ideas clearly and adding more details so they can confidently share their finished pieces.
Project-Based Learning (PBL): Exploring Lunar New Year Traditions
During PBL, students explored the traditions of the Lunar New Year, with a focus on how it is celebrated in Korea. Students learned about Korean Lunar New Year customs and traditions and worked collaboratively in groups to create different projects. Some groups designed traditional Korean clothing (Hanbok), while others built models of traditional Korean houses (Hanok). Students also created research posters about Korean New Year traditions and explored the traditional Korean game Yut Nori.
In addition, our class celebrated the Lunar New Year with a special school event. Students proudly participated in festive performances, bringing energy and excitement to the celebration. Through these activities, students not only learned about cultural traditions but also experienced the joy of sharing and celebrating together as a community.
Looking Ahead
In the coming months, students will continue strengthening their math and literacy skills while participating in engaging learning projects. We look forward to seeing our second graders continue to grow as curious learners, creative thinkers, and respectful global citizens.
