Celebrating Culture, Community, and Growth in Our Classroom

As we step into spring, our classroom has been buzzing with creativity, curiosity, and celebration! Here’s a look at the meaningful learning experiences and joyful moments we’ve shared over the past few weeks.

🌕 Lunar New Year in Our Classroom

We kicked off our celebrations by transforming our gym into a festive space filled with Lunar New Year decorations. A special shout-out goes to our talented students, who designed and created beautiful lanterns that lit up the room figuratively! Their hard work and artistic vision added a special touch that everyone noticed and appreciated.

During our math center time, we continued the celebration by practicing writing numbers in Chinese characters. Students enjoyed exploring the art and meaning behind the characters while strengthening their number sense in a new way.

👩🦱 Women’s History Month: Learning, Questioning, and Honoring

Throughout March, we’ve been diving into important discussions about Women’s History Month. Students explored a fundamental question:

“Why do we need a month specifically dedicated to celebrating women?”

Their thoughtful reflections sparked rich conversations about representation, equity, and the accomplishments of women throughout history who have shaped our world.

We’ve also begun working on expository writing pieces highlighting significant women in history. Students are researching, drafting, and learning how to structure informational writing—all while discovering inspiring leaders whose stories deserve to be told.

📚 Preparing for ELA & Math Testing

Our class has been practicing key skills and building confidence as we prepare for the upcoming ELA and Math assessments. Students have been:

  • Reviewing test-taking strategies
  • Strengthening reading comprehension
  • Practicing multi-step math problems
  • Building stamina and focus

We’re incredibly proud of their dedication!

💬 SEL Focus: Communication & Community

In our Social‑Emotional Learning block, we’ve been working hard on:

  • Communicating clearly
  • Speaking up and speaking out
  • Building a strong sense of community

Through discussions, partner activities, and reflective exercises, students are learning to express themselves with confidence and to support one another as members of our classroom family.

📖 How Families Can Support Learning at Home

As we continue preparing for our upcoming assessments and strengthening our literacy skills, families can play a powerful role in helping students grow as readers. One of the most effective ways to support your child at home is through daily reading time—even just 10–15 minutes each evening makes a meaningful difference.

To boost comprehension and critical‑thinking skills, try asking your child simple, open‑ended questions about the text. This encourages them to return to the reading, look closely for details, and use text evidence to explain their thinking. Here are a few helpful prompts:

  • What happened in the story today? What makes you think that?
  • How does the character feel? What clues helped you figure that out?
  • What changed from the beginning to the end?
  • What is the main idea or big lesson?
  • Where in the text did you find your answer?

These conversations not only support reading comprehension but also build confidence, vocabulary, and stamina—skills that will help students shine during our ELA testing and beyond. Thank you for partnering with us in creating strong, thoughtful readers!
