March Snapshot

Exploring and Growing: Second Grade in March

In Ms. Weiwei’s second-grade class, March has been a month full of growth, creativity, and meaningful learning experiences. Students continued to build academic skills while developing confidence, independence, and strong collaboration habits. Through hands-on activities, discussions, and engaging lessons, students are becoming thoughtful and curious learners.

Math: Solving Problems Within 1,000

This month, students focused on addition and subtraction within 1,000 using multiple strategies. They practiced solving problems using place value, number lines, and decomposing numbers into parts.

Students also learned to explain their thinking clearly and compare different strategies with their classmates. By exploring various approaches, they strengthened their number sense and became more flexible problem solvers.

Reading: Learning from Informational Texts About Plants

In reading, students explored a variety of informational texts to learn how to gather facts and information from nonfiction books. The focus this month was on plant growth and what plants need to survive.

Students practiced identifying key facts, asking questions, and locating important information in texts. They also learned how different informational books can organize and present knowledge in different ways.

Writing: Expressing Creativity Through Poetry

In writing, students explored poetry as a form of creative expression. They learned how poets use descriptive language, imagery, and rhythm to share ideas and emotions.

Students wrote their own poems and shared them with their peers. This unit encouraged creativity, voice, and confidence in writing.

Project-Based Learning (PBL): Ballroom Basix and Social Skills

During PBL, students participated in the Ballroom Basix dance program. Through structured dance activities, they learned important social skills such as polite behavior, cooperation, and respect for others.

Students practiced how to interact appropriately with partners, follow directions, and show respect in a shared space. This experience helped them develop both social awareness and confidence while working with others.

Looking Ahead

Starting in April, students will participate in a swimming program every Tuesday. Through this program, they will learn important swimming skills as well as water safety and survival skills. This experience will help students build confidence, strength, and awareness in the water.

In addition, students will continue to strengthen their academic skills as they move into new learning units, applying their knowledge in meaningful and engaging ways.
