Luna New Year

Celebrating Lunar New Year

This month, our students worked in groups to explore the rich traditions of Lunar New Year celebrations across different countries. Each group focused on one country Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, or the Philippines to investigate food, customs, and clothing.

Research Focus Areas:

1. Lunar New Year Food

  • What foods are eaten in your assigned country during Lunar New Year?
  • Are there any special dishes or sweets?
  • What do these foods represent (e.g., luck, health, family)?

2. Lunar New Year Traditions

  • How do people in your assigned country celebrate Lunar New Year?
  • Are there parades, decorations, or special activities?
  • How do families celebrate together?

3. Lunar New Year Clothing

  • What do people wear during Lunar New Year in your assigned country?
  • Are there traditional colors or styles?
  • Do people wear special outfits for celebrations?

Through this research, students discovered how unique and meaningful Lunar New Year celebrations are across Southeast Asia. At our school, we love learning about and appreciating everyone’s culture. We are proud to be a community rich in culture, and we believe it is important because it helps us understand and respect each other, strengthens our sense of community, and celebrates the diversity that makes our school special.

To conclude their learning, the children performed a lively dance, bringing all the traditions and celebrations they had explored to life. It was wonderful to see their enthusiasm and curiosity shine as they celebrated together!
