This month in Ms. Weiwei’s second-grade class, students have been busy exploring, thinking, and creating across subjects! From collecting data in math to expressing their ideas through writing and dance, our young learners continue to grow with curiosity and joy.
Math: Graphing and Problem Solving
In math, students learned how to collect and organize data using picture graphs and bar graphs. They practiced reading and analyzing the information to solve real-world word problems. We also reviewed addition and subtraction within 100, focusing on using strategies such as counting on, using add to help subtract. Students enjoyed creating their own survey questions and turning class data into colorful graphs!
Reading: Finding the Main Idea and Author’s Purpose
In reading, we focused on improving reading comprehension skills. Students learned how to identify the central idea, theme, and author’s purpose in both fiction and nonfiction texts. We discussed why authors write—to inform, entertain, or persuade—and students had fun sorting different texts into these categories. Their growing ability to think deeply about what they read is impressive!
Writing: Personal Narratives
In the writing workshop, students continued their story as young authors by working on personal narratives. They practiced zooming in on “small moments” and adding descriptive details to make their stories come alive. We encouraged them to think about how they felt during those moments and how to express that feeling in words. It’s amazing to see how their writing voices are becoming more expressive and confident each week.
PBL: Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month
As part of our Project-Based Learning (PBL) unit, we are celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month! This month, our focus country is Argentina. Students learned about its beautiful culture, flag, and traditions. They are also practicing a traditional Argentina dance for our upcoming school performance. The classroom is filled with music, laughter, and excitement as we get ready to share our learning with the school community.
Looking Ahead
In October, we will continue practicing different strategies to solve addition and subtraction within 100, and our writers will get ready to celebrate their narrative writing at the end of the month. We can’t wait to see how much our second graders will continue to grow and shine! We are so proud of our second graders for their hard work, creativity, and teamwork. Their enthusiasm for learning truly lights up our classroom every day!
