October Highlights🍂

🔢 Math: Building Our Mathematical Thinking

Our second graders focused on adding, subtracting, and working with data. ➕➖ Students practiced solving problems using different strategies, organizing information, and interpreting data to answer questions.

Our third graders began exploring multiplication ✖️ while learning to interpret and represent data on scaled graphs. Students worked on understanding multiplication concepts, organizing information, comparing quantities, and using graphs to answer questions.

🏡 How Families Can Help at Home:

  • Practice addition and subtraction using everyday situations, such as counting snacks or adding up toys.
  • Encourage your child to sort household items by color, size, or type and create a simple graph.
  • For third graders, practice multiplication through equal groups, repeated addition, or counting objects in groups.

📖 Reading: Exploring Characters and the World Around Us 🌎

Our reading lessons encouraged students to think deeply, ask questions, and make connections with the world around them.

🌱 Second Grade: Look Around and Explore!

Our second graders explored the question, “How does exploring help us understand the world around us?” 🔍 Through observation, discussion, and hands-on learning experiences, students practiced asking questions, noticing details, and sharing their discoveries. They learned how curiosity and exploration help us better understand our surroundings.

🎭 Third Grade: What Makes a Character Interesting?

Our third graders explored the question, “What makes a character interesting?” Students examined characters’ traits, feelings, actions, and motivations to better understand their roles in a story. They practiced using details from the text to support their ideas and explored how characters’ choices and experiences influence story events.

🏡 How Families Can Help at Home:

  • Read together and ask your child questions about what they notice in the story.
  • For second graders, take a walk together and encourage your child to ask questions about the world around them.
  • For third graders, ask questions such as, “What makes this character interesting?” and “What can you tell about the character based on their actions?”
  • Encourage your child to explain their thinking and share evidence from a book or their observations.

🎃 Halloween Fun in Our Classroom!

October wouldn’t be complete without a little Halloween fun! This month, students have opportunities to explore Halloween-themed activities, share their ideas, and engage in seasonal learning experiences with their classmates.

🔮 What’s Coming Next?

We look forward to continuing our learning journey in the coming weeks! In math, students will continue strengthening their number sense and problem-solving skills as they build on their understanding of operations, multiplication, and data.

In reading, our second graders will continue developing their observation and questioning skills, while our third graders will deepen their understanding of characters and how story details help readers make meaningful connections.

We will continue to encourage curiosity, collaboration, and independence as students learn to share their ideas, explore new concepts, and celebrate their progress.
